Niacinamide — The One Ingredient That Works for Every Skin Type

If there is one ingredient that deserves to be called universal, it is Niacinamide. It is the rare compound that has clinical evidence for efficacy across almost every skin concern, is tolerated by almost every skin type including sensitive and rosacea-prone skin, and works synergistically with almost every other active ingredient rather than conflicting with them.

Niacinamide is a form of Vitamin B3. Its mechanisms in skin are multiple and distinct: it inhibits the transfer of melanosomes from melanocytes to keratinocytes, which is the specific step in the hyperpigmentation process that causes dark spots to appear on the surface. It upregulates the synthesis of ceramides and other barrier lipids, strengthening the stratum corneum. It reduces sebum production in oily and acne-prone skin. It has measurable anti-inflammatory effects on the inflammatory cascade that drives redness and breakouts. And it has been shown in clinical studies to reduce the appearance of fine lines and improve skin elasticity through mechanisms that are separate from and complementary to retinoids.

At concentrations between two and five percent, the range used in Ecru products, Niacinamide delivers all of these benefits without irritation. Higher concentrations, sometimes seen in clinical treatments, can cause flushing in sensitive individuals. The two to five percent range is the evidence-backed sweet spot for daily use.

One of the most important things about Niacinamide is what it doesn't do. Unlike Vitamin C and retinoids, it does not increase photosensitivity. Unlike AHAs, it does not compromise the barrier. Unlike many actives, it can be used morning and night, through all seasons, regardless of barrier condition. It is the one ingredient we would recommend to anyone, at any stage of their skincare journey, with any skin concern.

It's in every Ecru product for exactly this reason.
