Starting a skincare routine is overwhelming because there is too much information and most of it is trying to sell you something. This guide is different. It starts with what your skin actually needs and works outward from there.
Step one is identifying your skin's primary concern, not its type. Type, oily, dry, combination, is largely genetic and doesn't change much. Concern, acne, hyperpigmentation, dehydration, sensitivity, ageing, is what your routine should address. Most people have one primary concern and one secondary one.
Step two is building the non-negotiable foundation: cleanser, moisturiser, SPF. These three products are the base of every effective routine, regardless of skin type or concern. The cleanser should be gentle, if your skin feels tight after washing, the cleanser is too stripping. The moisturiser should contain humectants (hyaluronic acid, glycerin) to draw water in and occlusives (oils, butters) to seal it in. SPF should be at least 30, broad spectrum, and used every single morning regardless of whether you're going outside.
Step three is adding one active at a time. An active is an ingredient with a specific mechanism of action, Vitamin C for antioxidant protection and brightening, Niacinamide for barrier support and pore minimising, Retinoids for cell turnover and collagen production, AHAs for surface exfoliation. The mistake most people make is introducing three or four actives at once and then not knowing which one is causing a reaction or which one is working.
Introduce one active, use it for four weeks, assess the result. Then add the next one.
Step four is patience. The skin turnover cycle is approximately twenty-eight days, meaning you won't see the full effect of any product until you've used it consistently for at least that long. Most people give up at week two. The people who see results are the ones who stay consistent.
The Ecru starter routine: Gel Cleanser, Serum, Face Cream, SPF. That's it. Four products, twice a day (skip SPF at night), and twelve weeks of consistency. It's everything your skin needs and nothing it doesn't.
